Annual Family Literacy Week
As part of NAEYC’s Celebration of Week of the Young Child held in April, Seventh Avenue hosted its Annual Family Literacy Week acknowledging the important role of adults in children’s lives at both of our sites in Manhattan and the Bronx.
As in the past, our event was a huge success thanks to the participation of our Community Partners who came and read to our children, our generous donors who gave books for children to begin or add to their home library, and our teachers and families who joined in this collaborative effort.

Unlike last year, we complimented our events with specific workshops for our families on the different ways to read to children, build their vocabulary and foster their emergent literacy further emphasizing the value of cultural diversity. A special thanks to Drs. Greta Doctoroff of Yeshiva University and Dr. Gigliana Melzi of New York University for sharing their literacy research and practical tips with our families.

Our Education in Dance team also joined us this year promoting literacy through music by reading one of their favorites, My many colored days by Dr. Seuss.

Lastly, our week culminated with grand finale, our Family Book Making event where families joined their children in making their very own ABC book. We’d like to especially thank Ms. Julia Rough from Pearson for providing the ABC books as well as free books that were added to children’s Bag of Books they received.
?Helen Keller wrote, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." Our many heartfelt thanks to all who helped make this a success.
